If i have a rusty derailer can that be fixed by oiling it or something?
its not useless now, but im hoping that it can be returned to its former glory.

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

Use a stiff brush to remove any loose rust, then drop it in a jar of white vinegar for a couple hours. Blow it dry and spray the whole thing with some WD-40.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

if you kept moving parts oiled, the odds are that rust is only on the surface, and hardly matters. Clean it off, and use something to prevent future rust. If the rust has affected moving parts and it's now stiff, try oiling it and see if you can you can work things totally free.

If not, try a penetrating oil designed to free frozen or rusty bolts, like "Kroil" or "Liquid Wrench" These have chemicals in them to break up rust and loosen frozen or binding parts. Be sure to wash these out afterward, and reoil.

As to it's former glory - cosmetically probably not, but mechanically no problem unless the rust damage was pretty sever.
