Sram X9

The cable to my rear derailleur came loose and now the shift indicator shows it in 18 yet the rear hanger only has shifted it into 16 how to correct this?

Reset or replace the cable.

To reset, run the rear der down to the smallest cog. Undo the cable and set the shifter so it shows the correct gear. Run the barrel adjuster all the way in (clockwise) then back it out 3/4 of a turn.

Back at the der, get ready to reattach the cable. On the X9, the cable should run across the TOP SIDE of the pinch bolt. Wi;th some needle nose pliers, gently pull all of the slack out of the cable, hold it with moderate tension and retighten the pinch bolt. Fine tuning can then be done with the barrel adjuster.

The two problems you can have with this procedure are; 1) Pulling the cable too tight when reattaching. Just take the slack out and give it a little more, and 2) Routing the cable to the bottom side of the pinch bolt. If you route it on the bottom, you will never get the index shifting to work right in all the gears.

Good luck, bk

You must have some older X.9's; mine don't have ANY gear indicators (zero-loss travel model, '07)! And the X.7's I had before them didn't number that high!

Just giving you some gas, here.....

+1. My X-7 only goes up to 9, too.
