rolled up tires
I don't know if they sale rolled up tires for road bikes, but at walmart I've seen full size tires in 6" cubes.
How will that tire contour to the rim?
And, does anyone carry a spare tire on a road trip or just your usual boots, spokes, patches, glue and air?

very common with tires that have flexible beads. they conform to the rim fine.
i understand that touring folks carry spares when on extended journeys.

I bring a spare tire on my long rides. My Pasela TG folding tire (32mm) packs down to 8" x 3" x 2", and I either tuck it under the saddle with a cinch strap like a seat wedge bag, or put it in one of my larger bags if I'm bringing those.

Bikes: I never learned to ride a bike. It is my deepest shame.

They are caled 'folding' tires. Often they tend to be a little more xpensive and come witha kevlar bead that allows the folding - non-folding tires usually have a steel bead that holds the tire round when not mounted on a rim. The steel is usually heavier. the only exception I know of is the cube-boxed tires at wallmart - these are heavy crappy tires with a flexible steel bead.
FWIW, only if you are going on a long long ride (multple days) it is probably worth the effort of briging a spare tire. Most people doing single day rides do not carry a spare tire. Also, I have seen many long-distance cyclists carry a non-folding bead tire and simply wrap it into a figure-8 shape and strap it to the rest of the luggage.
