Shimano lock ring wont budge

just in the process of restoring(?) an old Holdsworth Challenger GT to use as a hack bike, for when I dont want to leave more expensive bikes laying around, the back wheel has got a spoke missing, which Im looking to replace, however I have had no luck in trying to remove the lock ring in order to remove the cassette, when the cassette is rotated the middle part, which i presume is the lockring does not rotate with it, ive put the lockring tool into the middle bit, and tried turning, and it just doesnt.

Wandering which way to turn it, to unlock or if theres something im missing somewhere

All it says on the lock ring is DL? Shimano Singapore, no arrows as a hint!!!, and not sure of the wheel make, model, as missing all labels

If the part you presume is the lock ring does not turn with the cassette, it isn't a lock ring and you probably don't have a cassette. I'm guessing freewheel here. A pic would help determine what type of freewheel puller you'll need. If you don't want to purchase a puller, take it to your LBS and have them remove it. You can reinstall with only a chain whip.

Head to a bike shop. For a couple of bucks, they will remove it for you. You could do a lot more damage than that trying to get it off.

Whether it is a cassette lockring or a freewheel, the tool needs to be rotated counter-clockwise to remove.

If the whole cluster just spins easily, then you have a cassette and a chainwhip is needed to hold the cassette and freehub body stationary while you unscrew the lockring.

A chainwhip is not needed for freewheel removal. Freewheels can get really tight from pedaling, so it might be difficult. (Try sticking the tool in a bench vise, then you can rotate the wheel instead of the tiny tool for greater leverage.)

When installing, a chainwhip is not needed for either a cassette lockring or freewheel.

For a cassette, the freehub won't spin when you tighten the lockring (clock-wise).

For a freewheel, no tool is needed; just spin it on by hand, install the wheel, do a preliminary tuning of the deraillaur if needed, then ride up a short hill. The force from pedaling will tighten the freewheel more than you can get it with a chainwhip. Fine-tune the shifting after the short ride.
