Chainring Question

New to cycling... just bought a Caad9 and have a few questions.

I noticed that with my front chainring, the teeth are not all shaped the same. Some are fat with flat teeth, and every so often there are some that are narrow and the teeth are more pointed.

Is this normal? What is the reason for this?

It's normal, it's to allow for easier gear changes. Other types of chainrings have little pins and ramps built into the sides to aid shifting.

It's not so important for this question, but telling us you have a CAAD9 tells us nothing about what's on it.

Bikes: 1993 XO-1, early 1980s witcomb fixed gear, 1993 MB-1 singlespeed, a Surly 1x1 with pugsley front end, trek 520 converted to 650b, Coppi lugged road bike, Schwinn Crisscross townie

actually, if he at least specified which caad 9 he had, a 4,5,6, etc, we could learn quite a bit.
