Tire sizing?

Hi guys,
I just bought a 1975 Takara mixte that the only necessary replacement was the tires (very good find I thought). The tires say "27 x 1 1/8 (27 x 1 1/4 Fifty)" and I was wondering what size I should buy? I've read else where that either size will work on 1 1/4 rims, but I guess this designation confused me so that I'm not sure exactly what size this is...does anyone know why they would do this?

Either a 1 1/8 or a 1 1/4 will work on the rims. You will need 27" tires however. 700C will not fit because they have a different bead diameter.

As for the 27 x1 1/4 Fifty, I haven't a clue. I don't think you should worry about it, however.

yep, pretty much any 27" tire will fit 1", 1 1/8 or 1 1/4
