Ok, Ok, I got it wrong. The fixed cup removed by turning counter clockwise like most bolts etc. My point was the thread had acquired a life beyond the original need and was moot - except as a breeding ground for fussing.

I got the BB out and the stuck stem removed w/o damage so I'm counting this a win. Thanks for the help / advice.
