105 triple FD, use on double?
I have a 105 triple FD, but have just switched to a double. I don't quite have it dialed in yet, but it seems I'm having a little issue getting a spot where it doesn't rub at either one end of the range or the other... Is there a width difference between the double and triple versions? Or do I just need more time up on the stand dialing it in.
I have been riding this bike as a triple since 2006, so it might just be that I need a little more time getting it all dialed in. I really like the 105 FD, and it's been problem free since the day I dropped it on, so I'd kind of like to keep it on, though upgrading can always be fun too, and this might serve as an excuse to do so

It is in theory possible to have no cage rub on the chain with double CW but very difficult to achieve in practice as under torque there is some wobble
in the CWs that is not present on the stand. Triple users rarely if ever use the small-small and infrequently the big-big so do not ask as much of the
FD as do double users. There are some variances in inner cage construction and depth of cage between double and triple FD in some groups but this
should not be a problem.

Ok, kind of what I was thinking then, got to get it back to the workstand, and you're right, big big, and little little not so much when I was riding the triple, but now, it's kind of needed, as the gearing overlap is nowhere near what it was. I love the look of the new setup though. I've got to remember I had 4 years worth of dialing in my old setup, and just one ride on this one
I'll fiddle with it tonight and get it where it needs to be. I'll update tomorrow, and ask for more input if I'm still having issues.

You should be able to eliminate chain rub with a double without too much difficulty. The triple FD should work just fine with double, and the feather adjustment in the shifter should allow you to adjust derailleur position to eliminate rub without shifting chain rings. Its a matter of getting the cable tension dialed in and limit screws set.

Yes, the half clicks are the feather or trim function. See boxtext on Trimming in lower left corner of attached
