Back in the mid-80s I bought a jar of "Grey Thumb" nipple compound from Nashbar (then known as bike warehouse). I've built about a dozen pairs of wheels and never had an issue with nipples loosening or locking. It's a grey colored goo that reminds me of plumber's pipe dope. Works for me. Threads should be lubed and protected to varying degrees.
