Shimano Wheels / Ball Bearing Retainer's

I own a set of Shimano WH-7850-C24-CL Clinchers.

Front Wheel :

Rear Wheel :

https://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830698499.pdf

I have a few question's regarding the Ball Bearing Retainer's.

Front Wheel Part / Y-4BN98030 5/32"

Rear Wheel Part / Y-25R98080 3/16"

Are the Ball Bearing's, Ceramic ?

Can worn Ball Bearing's be replaced separately into the Ball Bearing Retainer's. Or would You need to purchase the entire thing ?

How long should the Ball Bearing's last assuming that they are serviced properly ?

1) Shimano Ball Bearings are always steel. Grade 25 Bearings are the way to go.

2) Yes. I have even heard of people who serviced their hubs by tossing the retainers and using just the ball bearings.

3) Like a lot of things, it depends. If you don't let water into the hub, and if you are on top maintenance-wise, then the bearings are gonna last a long time.

They use SS bearings in their top of the line hubs. You are better served with grade 25C. The bearings will last many tens of thousands of miles with proper maintaince and adjustment. You only need to replace the balls when they lose their shine.

It is actually better to use loose bearings than retainers.
