Wow! Making me scared to offer an opinion now. I wonder how many people I've offended in the past on this forum ;-) I. personally was interested in the original post. I knew there was a difference between the different materials, but had no knowledge of which was best . I just read the adverts or ask in this forum if I think I need to know. But any information offered here is welcome, even if only by a few of us. It is the same with the queries - the only hard questions are the ones you don't know the answers to. If any of us ask a question that most people on the planet know the answer to then it still needs answering . Luckily this forum is pretty good to newbies.

You are right. This forum is great to newbies.

I Believe the objection was that the OP wore out a chain ring very soon after buying it on Ebay or some other place that accepts pay pal - no details on the vendor were given. So he posted a rant here to help others understand that there is a difference in these two commonly used aluminum alloys. He also seemed to be suggesting that sellers take advantage of the fact that few people on the consumer side of this know the difference so they intentionally sell inferior components to unsuspecting parties.

1. Aluminum Chain rings from solid mainstream manufacturers meet their quality standards and have exhibited no characteristics of "wearing out" within the 45 days or so in the pay pal time fram for refund help much less after many many miles and years of service. Buy good parts from a vendor with a solid reputation and well know return policy and this problem goes away.

2. I for one was called into question and he threatened to place me on "ignore" for the mere suggestion that he may have gotten a used part. I only suggested this since he provided no details but said he payed through pay pal so I assumed ebay.... I'm not trying to impuned Ebay ore sellers on Ebay but there are lots of "gently used" parts on Ebay so buyer beware. If that is indeed where he bough this chain ring then he took the risk and unfortunately lost on it. Most do not so this is unfortunate but I take exception to the suggestion that sellers do this on purpose because people don't know better.

I just think there may be more to the story here and unfortunately, the OP did not share it with us so we are left to make assumptions based on few facts.

For the record, I have 10 year old Chain rings of either material and have noticed no appreciable difference in wear. I would have to ride a new chain ring 24 hours per day for 45 days to show wear in that time.

BTW If you google Wickepedia it explains the alloys and the difference stated by the OP.
