i neeed to get a new freewheel that holds 8 cogs. can anyone tell me what the heck is up with SRAM ? i think its a brand. are they shimano compatible should i mix shimano with Sram ? are the SRAM components any good compared to the XT and \or LX.?

Cassettes and freewheels are 2 completely different things, and require different types of wheels.
Can you be more clear about exactly what you have, and what you want ?

Cassettes and freewheels are NOT the same. Which one do you need?
I buy cassettes based on cost, weight, and gearing (not in that order) and for 7 and 8-speed SRAM makes what I want. Haven't bought a new Shimano cassette in a while.
