BB30 Noise

Hello, I have a Cannondale Supersix with a BB30 FSA Gossamer. When I pedal there is always a rough noise during downstrokes. It bothers me just because everything else is so quiet. Is this normal BB30 noise or it it a problem?

sure thats not the chain ?

BB30 is just the design/fit, its not a specific part. from what all I can see, it appears to be a answer to the question "How can we assemble these bikes faster?", not a question you, the rider, care about.

I make no cliam to being an expert, but I have a basic idea what BB30 is. I have also seen people talk about how it is more noisy then Mega Exo and so forth. I do not think it is the chain because I keep it clean and the noise only starts up when I am pushing hard gears.

have you checked for chain stretch ? a stretched chain will be noisy on the big cogs under load, exactly as you describe.

Check your chain by measuring it with a good steel rule; the chain checkers are notoriously inaccurate and may deceive you.

Agree. Use a good rule, not chain checker. Also, is it possible the chain is hitting the front DR cage under power?

+1,

A rhythmic snoring sound ---- zzzzz, zzzzz, zzzzz, ---- is often the chain rubbing the FD cage. It often happens under load in higher gears, because the load flexes the frame and crankset moving the top of the chainring outward to where the chain rubs the cage. When the load is removed the chain then recenters to the noload trim you set on the repair stand.

This is easily confirmed by looking down onto the Chain and FD cage and looking form deflection as you pedal.

OTOH - if you're hearing and feeling what sounds like a gentle purring or whirring, it could be normal chordal action, which becomes more noticeable under load, especially in higher gears (smaller cassette sprockets). Better chain oils will mask this to where you may not hear it, but it never goes away since it's a property of how chains run on sprockets.

BTW- BB problems usually sound and feel different, more like creaks and clicks as the parts deflect under load.

I had the same problem with my supersix and my synapse , I used Loctite 641 (others are using Loctite 609 ) around the outer bearing race and the BB housing . First you have to remove the bearings carefully and clean real good and apply the Loctite Bearing mount and press back in .. I bought a Parks tool to remove the bearings and made up a press using washers , nuts and threaded rod ( or a just the right length bolt) to press the bearings back in. some shops use grease in place of Loctite first and it will work for a short while ( at least in my case) and then they'll try loctite bearing mount.. Good Luck

You need to be a hell of a lot more specific than that; diagnosing noises via text is hard at the best of times. If you can't manage it with adjectives and onomatopoeia, shoot a vid.

My first thought when seeing BB30 + noise, = BB creak, an issue with this system, hence PF30.

Bikes: road+, gravel, commuter/tourer, tandem, e-cargo, folder

Remove BB bearings, clean and grease all surfaces, replace bearings (unfortunately these steps may require special tools that you don't have). If that doesn't fix the problem, then go with some Loctite 6xx (another specialty product that you probably don't have). In general, BB30 sucks, but the bike industry loves it because it is a new feature with which they can convince people that they need to buy a new bike.
