bb installation

I replaced an old sealed cartridge bottom bracket with SM-BB4600. Question - do the adapters need to be screwed all the way to the frame? I ask because it's narrowed the width (q factor) a fair amount. It seems like I could back them off a bit to get the chain straighter. Thanks!

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!

Yes, they certainly do. The matching Hollowtech II cranks have the spindle built into the driveside crank arm and if you don't thread the adapters in fully you won't be able to mount the non-drive side crank arm properly.

ooh, good point! thanks... if I'd have thought about it that would have been pretty evident!!
