What is this plug for?
Attached is a picture of pretty much your standard coil-sprung suspension fork. I have thought of what the plug at the bottom is for but for the life of me, can't figure out what it's plugging. I have done some Google searches too but they don't say anything about what its purpose is. Can someone tell me what it is plugging? Thanks in advance.

Following jimc's post, this exploded picture of the fork shows all the parts and the ones I am referring to are numbers 14 and 15--the bottom cap and fixing nut, respectively.

Just remove the allen bolt and find a nice steep slope and launch off....You will find the front wheel and lower part of the suspension leaving the bike. Make sure you have someone to record the action so that you can send it to America's Funniest Home Videos.

The footnut you're referring to holds the compression or damping shaft into the bottom of the leg. It's also a press-fit into the leg, so removing the bolt alone won't disassemble the fork. You'd have to drive the shaft out as well. This bolt, when removed, reveals a very convenient oil hole for doing quick quasi-services on low-quality forks. (20cc or 15w oil each leg).

#14 just fills in the hole .. there is nothing in that leg, all the suspension is in the other side.
the wheel axle and the bridge over the wheel make them work together ,
up market purchases, using the same castings, may have a more complex Air/Oil valving suspension
and then there may be something inside that Leg.
