Headset Question, '1972 Moto and Stronglight

Hey all,
I changed my headset from the factory issued one to a Stronglight version. I installed all of the bits and pieces but my threaded fork was too short for the drop bar and the tightening nut. I ended up machining off the teeth of the SL bearing cap, and putting the old drop bar in and then the SL nut. What are the measurements I should have been looking for to have made this fit?
Any help appreciated!
Ash

Bikes: 2008 Novara Randonee - love it. Previous bikes:Motobecane Mirage, 1972 Moto Grand Jubilee (my fave), Jackson Rake 16, 1983 C'dale ST500.

Headset stack height plus length of head tube (total stack height) needs to be equal to or less than total length of fork steerer column (bottom of bearing seat to top of column). You chose a headset that had a greater stack height than the original

For headset stack height calculation in this case you should also subtract the thickness of the front center-pull bracket.

And I'm curious if you can keep that headset tight w/o the teeth. I'm not sure I'da tried that.
