Cable stop problem

OK gentlemen: I have a 2012 Kona Jake CX frame with an integrated rear cable stop for cantilever brakes. My Avid Shorty brakes feature a nicely machined barrel adjuster that is too fat for the frame cable stop hole. The hole measures 6.3MM whereas the barrel adjuster measures 6.8MM. I am sure the LBS will have something that can be made to work but it would be nice to get the right part. Are there any standards with these things? Suggestions? (Reaming out the cable stop can't possibly be the solution here right?) Thanks.

Since you asked, 6mm has long been the closest thing to a standard for brake cable adjusters, so the stop was drilled to accommodate that. I don't know of any adjusters that measure 6.8mm, or threads that size, but if you want to use those, reaming the stop seems to be the only option (if there's enough material that strength wouldn't be sacrificed).

The adjuster is SRAM; an Avid Shorty Cantilever brake. Definitely 6.8MM. Anyway I realized the thing to do might be just put the cable end in there minus barrel adjuster. Appreciate the response.

If you don't mind losing your fine adjustment ability then yes, that's a simple solution.

If it was my bike I would want to keep that fine adjustment though. However, I would look to modify the barrel adjuster long before I would consider modifying the frame. It may be possible to chuck the adjuster up in a drill and file/grind/sand away 0.5mm from the outer diameter. Or just stop by your LBS and see if they have something that will fit as is.

There are a few different in line cable adjusters that can restore fine cable tension adjustment when the systen otherwise has no adjuster. I like the JagWire ones. Andy.

Well...I figured it out. The barrel adjuster on this cantilever brake goes on the end of the bridge cable NOT on the cable stop. If I had used the checklist more carefully... As we say in aviation, RTFM (Read The F-ing Manual). Here's to inexpensive lessons.

There are also the inclusion of a barrel adjuster under the head of the transverse cable .

some top line CX brakes come like that , a bit of cleverness and it can be added..to other cantilevers.

another way to make a Fine tune of the adjustment.
