So many of the bolts and screws on deailers etc are proprietary, if a LBS dont have them in their wonder box of of assorted nuts and bolts, they may have to order parts packets from the manuf.

Thanks.
Sure, if you go to Wally World everybody knows just what that screw looks like. Obviously I wasn't specific enough, as I don't keep precise dimensions in my head. Fortunately...

That was easy. An M5 x 0.8 is the kind of thing you can make yourself if all else fails, but I'll bet you can find bucketloads of them on ebay.

Fair enough... I just got back on the forum because my virus checker kept blocking it, so didn't see that.

Never mind.

They must have a more cosmopolitan selection at their stores in the East - here in the Heartland, I have been disappointed countless times at Lowes and HD.
I have resorted more than once to ordering stuff from Bolt Depot. Easy to spend more on shipping than on the goods but they have everything.

I've also used the Bolt Depot, as mentioned above. I needed some replacement caliper centering screws for some FSA K-force brakes and they had exactly what I needed in SS. Of the online stores that I searched through, these guys actually had a navigable website and I was able to easily find what I needed. The others didn't (at least that I saw).

I know it's a bit dated, but I've scoured home desperate, west marine, & the local bike shop. it's a challenge to get heads, threads, & lengths to match up...

Bikes: One brand-less build-up, and a Connondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra Disc. A nicer bike than I need, but it was a good deal, so... ;-)

[QUOTE=joejack951;16036951]More over, a #10-32 button head is essentially the same fastener and those are typically even easier to find.

NO. More specifically, #10-32 is easier to find, and almost fits, but won't hold properly can will likely damage threads.

+1 A 10-32 is a sloppy fit in a properly drilled and tapped M5x0.8 hole and won't hold well. The tap drill for an M5x.8 bolt is 4.3 mm or 0.1693". For a #10-32 it's a #21 or 0.1590". That's close but no cigar.

The thread pitches are within a few ten thousandths of an inch. The tolerances ranges for the threads just about overlap (yes, a 10-32 is slightly smaller than an M5). Would I use a 10-32 in place of an M5 in a critical application? No, of course not. If I was stuck and needed a fastener to get my bike back on the road would I? Of course.

In hindsight, I should not have said "essentially the same" but something more like "close enough for a non-critical fastener."

No. The US and Burma are still on the English system.

The OP was looking for a screw for a clamp mount front derailleur. Desperate times and desperate measures, maybe, but I don't know whether I'd ever be desperate enough to try that application for a #10-32 on a build.

thanks -

I placed an order Wednesday morning and it was delivered Thursday afternoon. I will certainly make this my "go-to" place for hardware.

I guess I'm lucky. I have a True Value hardware store on the way home from work that carries a full selection of metric stainless fasteners in button, hex or philips head, M3 through M10.
