Insert bike into dumpster of choice and replace with a newer model, then maintain bike as recommended.

If this is just your basic roadmaster, you will have near as much money in the parts as you would for a new bike.

Howdy. It seems that you are not aware of the fact that your bike is a piece of doodoo. You probably COULD fix it, but it will break again, soon. It was designed to be ridden no more than 75 miles or so. Don't throw it away however. Get some tools, and save the parts. They're all crap, but there is nothing wrong with a crappy seatpost, crappy brake levers, crappy tires, crappy seat (so long as you find it comfortable), crappy waterbottle cage, crappy handlebars. Everything else is pure trash. Except perhaps the nuts and bolts. Unless they are quite stripped and rusted, they are good to have around, as several of them will have bike-specific applications.
Get a quality used bike, and save the parts for that day when your quality stuff fails. Try craigslist.
To learn more about specific bike repair, go to www.parktool.com
To get a bike, go to a used bike shop.
Before buying the bke you have your eye on, politely ask the nice people in bikeforums about it. Look at it and write down all the words written on all the parts. Lots of people will make fun of you for knowing nothing about bikes, but some will give you good (if condescending) advice.
Also: please recycle.

Explain your problem in complete sentences and describe the broken parts in as much detail as you can. I don't think anyone can get more than a foggy idea of what's wrong with your bike from the description you gave.
