Stem Bolt Size?
I'm referring to the bolts that hold the faceplate onto the stem, rather than the one that holds the wedge on a quill stem.
I've got several different bikes, and one thing they have in common is that the cheap factory bolts that come with the stems rust within a couple of months. I'd like to replace them with stainless bolts. Is there a standard size for these, and if so, what is it? If not, I've got four Deda stems and one Specialized.
Thanks!

No there's no single standard, but you can be sure they're standard metric hardware. Remove a bolt, bring it to any decent hardware store and fit a nut on it, then buy the screws that match.

Also know that some stems need bolts with smaller than standard heads on them and washers with the proper O.D. are almost impossible to find if you can't salvage the old ones. This place has the proper bolts and washers but expensive. At least you can use this for reference so you can see what I'm talking about. https://www.torontocycles.com/Selling...ium_Bolts.html Check out the narrow head bolts and washers near the bottom left hand side of the page. I don't have a comprehensive list of what stems need the smaller heads so measure yours if possible before going to the hardware store.

....I just tapped and helicoiled a repair on one stem. It used M8 in a coarse thread (1.25, I think ?)
It is a nice stem, so I was thrilled to find the right sized helicoil repair kit.
But what the other guys said, take one out and go to the small hardware section of Home Depot,
among other places, that has a drawer of stainless, metric bolts.

Bikes: '96 Litespeed Catalyst, '05 Litespeed Firenze, '06 Litespeed Tuscany, '20 Surly Midnight Special, All are 3x10. It is hilly around here!
If it took am M8 bolt I assume it was a single bolt "wrap around" clamp like the older Cinelli or Nitto models. All of the removable faceplate stems I've seen take M5x.8 for 4-bolt faceplates and M5x.8 or M6x1.0 bolts for 2-bolt faceplates.

Cinelli made their own bolts and the blind nut you only saw the back side of , on the 1A, from the front.
and the 1R was a whole unique scheme.
Nitto makes a D shaped nut that goes with their technomic stems .

I know it was a light hearted comment, but it never pays to bite hands that feed you, even if you don't like the food. You never know who'll be around next time you're hungry.

And while I'm at it, thanks to all who chipped in. I'm going to pull a couple of stem bolts and make it down to Home Depot or Lowe's and find the bolts I need.
