Missing Link KMC-11 master link

Among some of the many good tidbits I picked up on this forum. Carry a masterlink and chain breaker on rides.

Amazingly enough this weekend on an organized ride yesterday, came upon one of the riders with a broken chain, unfortunately he had a 10-speed I've got an 11 and apparently they're not usable according to the package. He managed to get the master link on but needed pliers to clip it into place, I'm guessing the tolerances weren't exact, but he figured he could probablly nurse it home. He was behind me for a couple miles before I turned off on another route so apparently it worked ok.

My question, when using the missing link in it's proper application ie 11 speed link for 11 spd chain. DO you need pliers to click into place. Just need to know so I can carry a leatherman tool if need be.
Thanks!
Chris

You shouldn't. You should be able to do it with just your hands, or by pushing on the crank. But I've had some that where tougher that others to secure. YMMV

in descending thickness, overall width of chains, 8>9>10>11..

Put it in the top half of the chain and the pedal force. should pull the pins in the Keyhole shaped hole to lock it in Place.
