That's an intriguing suggestion. I've seen these on breakaway frames, but it hadn't occurred to me that they might work for this as well. Thanks!

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

Won't help. The RD will still be attached to the bike by the Chainstay/RD loop.

However depending on the type of chainstay fitting, the OP might be able to Dremel a slot so the cable can be slipped out sideways once it's slackened. Then the RD and the cable can be packed in a small sack and tied to the frame someplace.

If the OP can't slot the chainstay fitting, or doesn't want to, he might find a clamp-on chainstay stop, and slot that.

Once the cable is split everything further back can be removed from the frame. One advantage I forget to mention is that the adjustments will remain (mostly) in place.

All my bikes have slotted cable guides and AFAIK the vast majority of bikes have them.

Slotted chainstay stops are the exception, not the rule. Without a slot, there's no way to remove the rear section of cable which is still trapped by the head of the cable splitter.

I've hacksawed out stuck seatposts before, so slotting a cable stop braze-on myself is not a big deal. But in this case, I'm having a new custom frame built, so I'll just ask the builder to use slotted stops
