Need help.. rear wheel does not turn.

My chain is pretty rusted and stuff... I guess its because its been used to go to school and locked outside in the snow here a lot. The winter took its toll on the chain part of the bike if that helps...

Anyway my pedals turn, but my rear wheel does NOT

Any help appreciated.

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter

If I'm reading you right, you can turn the pedals which in turn turn the sprocket on the rear wheel, but the wheel doesn't turn.

If so, then the same rust that attacked the chain also attacked the ratchet mechanism inside the freewheel or freehub. Sometimes these magically come back to life if flushed with a solvent and and relubed, but if the rust is severe they're toast.

Of course if it's still outside where it's wet and frozen, then it might simply be that water is frozen inside the freehub, and it'll come back to life when brought inside and thawed out.

Thanks for your reply "if flushed with a solvent," how do I go about doing that?

OP, in my opinion you'd be better off having the freewheel taken off and a new one put on, new chain too. Tops you might be out 30 bucks and you'll have a lot more peace of mind.

Bikes: Old Steelies I made, Old Cannondales

Do you mean you can turn the pedals backwards, but not forwards ? Or the pedals turn in both directions, but the wheel does not turn ??

The more specific you can be in describing a problem, the better an answer you will get.

Also, giving details about the make & model, possibly including posting pictures of your bike will help a lot.
