Crank Problem - Lopsided?

Hi guys, absolute clueless person here.

I have a problem with my crank, it seems as though the non-chainring side seems to be protruding out longer than the other side thus causing the chainring to rub against the frame.

Anyone have any ideas??

is the bb new? looks like the spindle shifted from the press fit of the cartridge unit. you could also be using a bb meant for 73mm shells on a 68mm shell

Does the RH arm fully seat on the spindle? If so and if the ring's rubbing is slight you could always place a spacer behind the RH BB unit's flange, therefore moving the RH side of the spindle out. Andy.

looks like the BB is too wide for the BB shell. wrong size maybe, as mentioned above. the adjustable side on all my bikes sits pretty flush with the BB shell.

Bikes: 2008 Novara Randonee - love it. Previous bikes:Motobecane Mirage, 1972 Moto Grand Jubilee (my fave), Jackson Rake 16, 1983 C'dale ST500.

As the BB is installed from the drive side the length would have nothing to do with how far the BB extends on the drive side.

you're right. i agree. but seeing as i think there may be two problems, i'm reminded of an old Rodney Dangerfield joke...

woman walks into the doctor's office and tells him a long story about what she supposes is wrong with her. he tells her that despite her symptoms, she is perfectly healthy and it's just her imagination. this didn't sit well her and she told the doctor in no uncertain terms, 'well!.... i want a second opinion".

doctor says, "OK, your're ugly too."

Well, not quite right in my understanding. While the axle length remains the same between two same axle lengths but different shell widths BB units the RH side flange is closer to the RH axle end. So installing a 118x73 Bb unit, compared to a 118x68, resulsts in the crank fitting 2mm closer the the frame. And the LH arn sits 2mm further out.

But we don't know what the OP's installed BB is, or was, yet. Andy.

Looks like a 73mm BB installed in a 68mm frame. A 2.5mm spacer on the drive side will center it.

i too think this may work. it's a kludge, but may work. if it was my bike and had to make it work, i would buy a couple, maybe three, BB spacers like this Sturmey Archer sprocket spacer from Harris Cyclery and see how it went.

Most shops should have a 2.5mm bottom bracket spacer. I always have a few around that came with external bottom brackets and don't get used on a 73mm shell.
