help with bottom bracket, want to make sure on purchase.

Hello All,

I need your help. I am helping a friend out with a new crankset, I need a one compatible with a 9 speed so i decide on the Shimano FC-M430 his bottom bracket shell is 68mm and i just need to be sure on the bottom bracket that i will be ordering.

All signs are pointing to it being a ES-25 Octalink in a 68mmx118mm,

https://techdocs.shimano.com/media/te...9830690265.pdf

Can one of you confirm my findings for me? just want to be sure i am ordering him the right item! thank you very much.

(pulling my hair out )

If it's the un26 that i need i can't find out in octalink! supppper annoying

Bikes: Raleigh Companion, Nashbar Touring, Novara DiVano, Trek FX 7.1, Giant Upland

There are multiple variations of the FC-M430

ES25 is for Octalink V2
UN26 is for Square Taper (JIS)

Bikes: 2008 Novara Randonee - love it. Previous bikes:Motobecane Mirage, 1972 Moto Grand Jubilee (my fave), Jackson Rake 16, 1983 C'dale ST500.

Did it occur to you to call a supplier of the part you want and ask them?

Nope. Not discontinued. I just bought a 2014 Giant Anyroad 2 that has a R453 Octalink V2 crankset on it. I was surprised to see it was still being used.

I think where i am confused is with shimano part numbers,

for instance on the tech doc they list the fc-m430 and the fc-m430-8,

does the 8 in fc-m430-8 stand for the 8 splines on a octalink axle?

nothing on the document breaks down that part of the part number.

Probably. Looking at the crank models, the ones that end in "-8" work with the Octalink BBs.

If you have the crank in hand, it should be very obvious if it' takes a square-taper or splined Octalink V2 BB.

OK, If you look at your PDF, it's either an UN26 or an ES25

I just did a quick image search and the ES25 is Octalink

and the UN 26 is square taper.

Look at the crank and it's obvious whether it's a square taper or Octalink connection.

If you're ordering the crank (haven't seen it yet), you should know which one you're ordering, OR just ask for the correct BB for whichever one you're ordering when you order it, OR, go on EBAY, buy both BB's (they're very cheap), when you get the crank, you'll see which it is (octalink or square taper) and send back the one you don't need.

Eaasy peasy.
