Treating inside tube on an old steel bike

Hello all,

I have my Fuso from the late 80's apart and I'm about to put it back together. The inside of the frame is in pretty good shape and I won't be doing anything extreme when it's put back together. One of the things I'd like to do is treat the seatpost tube with something either I have or could possibly get at a local auto parts shop. The thing is I'm not sure what I should use or what is most liked. Any ideas?

Any and all responses is most welcomed and appreciated.

If your frame is steel some use product called Frame Saver to protect inside from rust.

AMSOIL Heavy-Duty Metal Protector

This is what I use in my frames. It is basically the same thing as Frame Saver at a lower price.

JP Wiggle or Pro Gold framesaver are the go-to products for this. If you want something you can easily find locally, call your local motorcycle shops and ask for Maxima ChainWax. It comes in an aerosol can with a WD40-style nozzle tube. Spray it in the tube, rotate the frame around a bit to distribute it and let it dry. As the solvent flashes off, it leaves behind a waxy protective film. Having used the Pro Gold framesaver product, I can safely say that ChainWax is very similar (if not the same) stuff.

I picked up a big ol' can of this stuff for $8.99 at a local auto parts store. Seemed to do the trick nicely.

Both the Amsoil and the Frame Saver sounds good to use on my frame. The only problem is that neither my LBS which includes Performance, doesn't have Frame Saver, and my LAPS (local auto parts store), which includes both Autozone and Napa, doesn't have Amsoil.

I feel like I live in the boonies!

Any other suggestions? I'm not crazy to have to go online to get something like this. So something I could pick up local would be great. I am willing to go to LA if I have to.

Call some LBS that are relatively local to you. Some may stock FrameSaver and others may be able to order it. FrameSaver has been around for seemingly eons. J.P. Weigle is a long-time top tier frame builder in Boston. His frames are highly regarded.

I *do* live in the boonies, but the dealer locator on the Amsoil web site helped me find a local shop that carried their products.
