I rotate 3 chains. Easy to have one ready to install, stored in a zip lock bag all oiled and ready.
I oil whenever it looks dirty on the bike, and always wipe "dry." Usually about every 100 miles or so, and remove for cleaning/reoiling about once a month (every 800-1000 miles).
My chains and sprockets last almost forever, using cheap KMC chains.
Yes, I sometimes overdo maintenance, but I like it.

Under this use - any chain saw bar oil would be a good choice.

Bikes: 2008 Novara Randonee - love it. Previous bikes:Motobecane Mirage, 1972 Moto Grand Jubilee (my fave), Jackson Rake 16, 1983 C'dale ST500.
WD-40 is an expensive way to clean grease from a chain - better to use mineral spirits. Neither WD-40 nor pretty much anything else will remove rust from a chain. The rust itself will not affect the chain very much unless it keeps the links from moving smoothly, and in that case it's best just to throw it away.

This thread inspired me to look at the chain on my main commuting bike last night. Ick! I thought, OK, I could spend just a little time trying to clean it. Then I noticed it was very worn, much worse than I like to let my chains get. OK, time for a replacement, and quick. Well, once again, I dodged the need to clean it, but I'm disappointed in myself that I let the chain elongate so much.
