Using a bike work stand
I own a Feedback Pro Elite repair stand. In setting it up for repair and tune-ups, is the telescoping shaft raised to the work height before or after the bike has been mounted into the clamp???

hmm, this gives me an idea for a thread, im thinking about building my own work stand
mate, it would be easier to adjust the height before mounting the weight of the bike, i would imagine

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.
For me that's easy.
Except in rare cases I always clamped bikes by the seatpost. When you do it that way, you pretty much need the highest height setting to bring the bike up to comfortable work height.

The reply doesn't answer the original question. Is the extension fully raised before or after the bike has been clamped to the workstand******************************??

Another question crops up. When replacing the pedals which can be torqued on pretty tight, should they first be loosened up with the bike setting on the ground prior to clamping to the repair stand**********

I leave the stand at working height since it's easier to lift the bike into the clamp than to futz with the stand.
For tight stuff like pedals I do it with the bike on the ground since it gives you more leverage. Especially with pedals since the mnemonic is to turn the wrench towards the rear wheel.

I have one of their work stands. It really doesn't matter whether you set the height before or after you clamp the bike into place. Sometimes while I am working on my bike I will raise or lower the bike if I have to work on different parts of the bike. Last fall, I changed the front triangle of my mountain bike. I changed the height of the stand several times while I was working on the bike as I needed to work on various parts of the frame

Bikes: too many bikes from 1967 10s (5x2)Frejus to a Sumitomo Ti/Chorus aluminum 10s (10x2), plus one non-susp mtn bike I use as my commuter
Whatever is easier for you. I find it easier to set stand height first, so I'm not fighting the bike's weight, but I'm me and you're you, so do what works for you.

OK. I haven't changed the height in 20 years. I leave it at max height all the time.
