Bike for old guy [40] at the BMX track.
So my 8 year old just started BMX racing this year and loves it - when the track is quiet I'd like to go out with him on the track, but my old Cannondale CAAD2 frame is much more of a commuter than a track bike. Can anyone suggest what might be a good bike for an older guy, 5'8" and 200lb? My son just wants me to get a BMX, but I'm thinking more of something a bit more like a mountain bike. But I'm also thinking single speed might be good, just for durability and maintenance reasons - I already have a perfectly good commuter bike for when I need to get places.
Just looking for suggestions on what might be out there that would be a good fit, new or older models as well as I have no issues buying used. Budget about $1000 or less. Who knows, perhaps a BMX is best?
Thanks!

My kids got into it a couple years ago. Unfortunately, we didn't make it to the track last year. I'm hoping they will want to this year, they really enjoyed it. I built up a 24" cruiser to ride during the warm up. I have a blast. I suck but it's still fun. I don't think my MTBs would be fun. Ask around the track too. Often people are selling older bikes.
