I have a Haro Backtrail X24 and I need front brakes. Rear brakes aren't cutting it for me. I dont do tricks so having front brakes wont be a hassle. Which brake calipers do you recommend? Apparently I have to purchase one of the older style calipers because my fork doesnt have those pegs to mount calipers on. Thanks.

You will have to either get those really bad Odyssey 1999 brakes, which will go into the hole on your forks sterror tube (where the legs of the fork are welded on) or you can get a "990 Brake Plate" from a mailorderlike Dans Comp that will allow you to run the newer and better working U-Brakes...

If you have the money, get a new fork, because it will look cleaner and Haro forks are very weak, ive bent 2 and know some other people that have completly destroyed them(Mude, haha)

As for companys that make brakes, look into Odyssey and if you have some extra cash Look at the Fly Suelo brakes...

Great! Thanks a bunch. How much would a decent fork go for anyway? I just bought the bike and it feels a bit silly to change the fork already lol...So maybe for now, Ill get the plate and either a U or V brake. What do u recommend between the U and V brakes?

V-Brakes are mostly for Race Frames, and only for the back i beleive, if not, you still wouldnt want them for the front.

A good 24" fork should run you aboout $80-$115ish

S&M Race 24" is a good fork for just cuising or if your fairly smooth on your bike, but it doesnt have the 990 mounts, so you would have to keep the brake plate, im not sure i know any 24" forks with brake mounts, but its possible if you shot an e-mail over to Chris Moeller (or anyone else at S&M) you could see if they can weld on some 990 mounts on one of their 24" forks...

If hes going to buy new brakes he should get ones that are trusted and work well, so Odyssey seems like a good buy.

The dia-compe 990's are a very powerful brake if you know how to dial your brakes well. They have some donwsides though... The pads dont have threaded posts and they are a bit tricky to get dialed perfectly, but once you get them they should stay good. The stack hieght is higher then most newer brakes so if you run CS mounted brakes and a small gearing setup then they may not be compatible. They are cheap though and Id say definetly worth the money, as when they are set up and dialed properly they can out-perform most brakes on the market

i love my 990's...a liiittle bit tricky to dial in the pads only beacause the angle is weird, but once you get em they are pretty much set. They have almost no flex too, which is good.

Math time. Add up the price of a decent brake, plus the dodgy adapter plate. That will give you a pretty ho-hum brake setup. Or, get a fork with V brake mounts and some cheap V brakes, and sell your current fork on ebay. You should end up spending an extra $30 or so for some solid brakes.

I don't think I've ever seen a 24" fork with U or V mounts.

If you do mount a brake plate I'd go with a U plate on the back of the forks and run the cable up the steerer tube, it's probably the best compromise of performance and tidiness. The braking will force the plate against the forks. If you run a V brake plate in front you'll have the cable hanging out all over the shop and you'll need to secure the plate at 3 points.

Dooley - there are 24" MTBs (if you can call them that) for kids. If you haven't seen a 24" fork with V brake posts, it's because you never had any reason to look. I'll bet QBP or J&B has them for $20.

I should have specified BMX forks. Plus if I ever saw someone do what you've just described I'd probably have to gay them to death.
