So I just got into a fight...
with my mother. I should be getting my bike back tomorrow, and she still doesn't want me to get back on my bike and do the same things I was doing before my injury. I told her I would be careful, but that's not good enough for her. She wants me to just cruise around on it and do nothing. She doesn't understand how important it is to me and she thinks that somehow if I get hurt again that my whole college career is over. What do you guys think?

If I was hoping for a career as a professional athlete (you still want to do baseball, right?), and it wasn't going to be in BMX, I would definitely not take any unneccesary risks or push myself. That said, look at Revmonkey, he got ran into when he was cruising down a parking lot and ate **** for the last time.
I'm not going into a career where a less-than-100% leg would make it impossible, but I also don't have health insurance and my parents can't afford a big hospital bill, so I take it easy on the bike and know my limits. If you keep riding and trying stuff, but not way out of your ability, you'll eventually progress and get pretty good without getting hurt too badly. Honestly, brakeless is an unneccesary risk, but one I choose to take because I never go balls-out at anything.
If you think you can make it as a pro BMX rider, go for it, the injuries are a neccesary evil, but if not, you'll have to decide if being good at a hobby you have as a kid is worth settling for a career you didn't want later.

Since when do 5'7" 130 lb guys make it to the majors? I don't think it's going to happen. I'm not big enough. I'm not going to be a pro BMXer either- I just really enjoy doing it. I do what I love to do. I love to ride my bike, so that's what I want to do.

She won't believe that. I don't know why my mom has to be so difficult. If I broke my leg playing baseball she wouldn't care. She's just biased towards whatever she likes.

She does not have my bike. It is my bike, but she thinks she's going to sell it. I already told her all of this.

If I were your mother (and I thank the Gods that I'm not), I'd make you pay your own medical bills. Then see how little is left for your college fund.

Do you live in a bubble? No matter what you do in life, you are going to get hurt. A lot of people get hurt just tripping over their own feet or falling down stairs. Accidents can happy to anyone at any time.

Your mom needs a good sit down talk with an adult. Riding your bike, even BMX, will not ruin your college career. A professional athlete would still need to have a college degree, if he or she is to continue earning money after the athletic career is over.

If you pitch, and you have a good arm i'm sure you could still make it. After all the only thing your size might limit is your hitting, but most pitchers aren't good batters anyways.

My whole family is short. I'm pretty much done growing. Scouts always draft the bigger kids with the talent first so they don't take scrutiny if a smaller player does not turn out as planned. I have a good arm and all, but I don't think I could ever make it. There's always someone better than you.
