Please excuse me, I am a bicycle NEWB (as well as forum NEWB)

I was helping some friends move out and there happened to be a road bike in the garage that they were going to throw out, I figured I would ask them if I could have it and sure enough they let me have it (free). All I know is that the bike is way too big for me and wanted to sell it, but have no idea what it's worth or what model etc. it is? Here are some pictures, maybe you'd be able to know. Here are a few pics (sorry in advance if my photography skills suck). So far I know it's probably an 80's model Trek Elance 400 with a Reynolds 531 frame. There are some pics here and the one with the serial number is actually "238644". If you don't know what it is, no big deal! Just thought i'd run it by you. I don't even know what size the frame is, but its definitely for a tall rider. from the seat in lowest position to the ground I measured about 98cm and from the base of the seat tube to the bottom of the frame was about 64cm.

BTW: Everything on this bike is functional and works. I was thinking about putting it on craigslist, but no idea how to price this. Thank you all for your time in advance.

It appears to be in superb condition - the Elance models in 531 are especially well liked. The Shimano LA Derailleurs are good. The only real detriment is that people generally prefer little frames instead of large ones, which adversely affects the sales price - unless you are willing to wait a good long while.

Around here, 350-400. I would shoot for the higher end because it's '531. YMMV

Free is an excellent buy. Nice score. 238644 = from the Trek website that makes it a 1986 25" frame. https://www.vintage-trek.com/images/t...rekCatalog.pdf

It looks to be in very good shape cosmetically. Steel Treks are very desirable especially with 531 main triangle. If it is mechanically sound then put it on Craig's list if it's too big for you. Your location will be important on what price it will bring.

I am in SoCal and have sold 2 25" frame bikes in the last 3 months, both Schwinns, 1 Prelude, 1 Tempo with Tenax tubing. Both were super clean and rode great. Price seems to top out at $225 but a Trek might bring more IMO.

The market for a large frame is obviously smaller since the guy who is about 6'5" tall has to be looking for what you have to sell it. If that bike were a 56 or 58cm I would be listing it at $325 where I live. You might list it at $300 and see what happens.

Your pictures aren't that bad really but you need one of the full bike, drive side against a plain background, your white garage for example. Also raise the saddle to a normal height for the picture and flip the front wheel around so the quick release levers are on the same side. It presents the bike better. And clean it REALLY well even though it looks clean already you can still get some of the grime out of nooks and crannies of the hubs, brakes etc and you don't want to take pictures of greasy parts. That will help get top dollar. Good luck with your find.
