1996 Cannondale R1000
HI, Someone on craigslist is selling this 54cm bike for $500 obo. It look like it is Ultegra and is in good shape, I was thinking about getting it for my wife, is this a reasonable price or out of line?

Need photos and more details. Is it 8,9,10 speed? Did you look it up on Bikepedia or the Cannondale vintage website? Link> https://www.vintagecannondale.com/catalog.html?
Bikepedia says it came with Dura Ace 8 speed. I love Cannondales. I had a 2005 R2000 and rode it for 3 years, couple of thousand miles before going to a 2012 CAAD10.
Most important, is it the right size and will your wife enjoy riding a stiff aluminum frame?
96 catalog shows the R1000 with DA, aero bars and 650c Spinergy wheels. Seller probably has the year wrong if it's an Ultegra bike with original components.

Still learning
Is it the right size for her? Probably need to be at least 5'6" for it to be comfortable to ride. If it's good cosmetically, clean and ready to ride, price is fair.

Regardless, $500 is too much for a 1996 C-dale. If it's mint, $300-ish

R1000 was top of the line, vintage Cannondales are excellent bikes and USA made. $500 is on the high side, I could see it in an expensive market for a very clean bike that needs nothing, but $300-400 would be more like it in most cases. It is a race bike, quick handling, stiff, fast, for aggressive riding, not suitable for racks/luggage or wide soft tires. Is that what your wife wants? if she wants a sit up straight bike for leisurely rides, with low gears to climb hills with weak legs, this is not the bike for her.

If it fits, and if it has Dura Ace 7400 including the STI levers, and if everything works great (17 year old STI shifters are prone to failure), and if it is ready to ride and in pristine condition, then IMHO, its worth it.
Unfortunately, according to bikepedia, the 1996 R1000 came with goofy grip shifters. It that is the case, no, its not worth it.
I've sold a lot of Cannondales over the years, any in nice condition, with STI and ready to ride will bring $350, and sell quickly. And I am talking lower end STI. Dura Ace would bring more, but again, with goofy twist grip shifters, not a chance.
So without pics, no idea. A lot of owners modify/upgrade/change their bikes, and in 16 years, that can mean a lot of changes.

In Michigan and NYC, clean higher end C-dales at $300 sell within a half day.

My wife is 5'8" and she has tried other 54cm bikes and they fit her well. I'm not able to post the pics right now but there are pics of the front and rear derailleurs and they have ultegra stamped on them. I heven't seen the bike yet, but hte pics look pretty good.
