Picked up a bike today.

Not the usual old ATB because everything except the tires are marked Campagnolo - Made in Italy

Any idea of how old it is or how much it might have cost when new ??

Lucky you. I don't know much about the brand of bike but that looks like Olympus from around '92/93ish. I am guessing MSRP may have been around 1K

Genesis was one of Lorne Shield's brands. They came out for 1990. Campagnolo had introduced their ATB groups in 1989 and marketed them through 1995 but they did not sell well. The serial number may provide a clue to the actual year and source.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I did not know that Campagnolo had complete mountain bike groups.

I'll look for Lorne Shields on the internet. I have a Shields Nishiki ... no relation I guess.

Bike serial number is AG 32433

Does that tell me anything ??

Yes, it's the same Shields.Lorne was a contemporary of Howie Cohen, who owned the Nishiki brand. Both had taken over their fathers' bicycle business. Shields eventually lost the Canadian Nishiki rights to Norco. At various points in time Shileds also distributed Peugeot, Jeunet, Falcon, Speedwell, Hugh Porter, Cinelli, Pony, Pashley, Dy-No-Mite and their own Shields brand.

Sorry, the S/N doesn't help. The Genesis decals with the overlaid series bar looks a lot like the Nishiki decals from the same period, so I thought they may have been sourced through Norco and their manufacturer. Regardless, I still have a few avenues to explore, as I've got quite a few Canadian magazines from the era and know Lorne. Send me a reminder PM, if I haven't posted by next week.

I have heard back from Lorne Shields and he does not think that this is one of his bicycles, as he sold the brand in the mid-1990s and "absolutely" does not recall any being spec'd with Campagnolo. I have yet to come across any tests or advertisements in my early 1990s Canadian bicycling magazines.

For what its worth, the people who made it disagree....

This from Natalie at Genesis Cycles:

" Thank you for your enquiry. The bike in your photo was made for a company called Shields Intertrade sometime in the early 90’s. Some of us here at Genesis Cycle used to work for Shields Intertrade before the owner retired and closed it down. I am sorry I cannot give you any more information on your bike as all of that information is no longer available. I must say your bike looks in great shape."

Such is life in the C&V world, where even two first hand parties can disagree. It's not the first time and it surely won't be the last.
