Whelp....unfortunately I'd rather NOT sell this, but school has kicked my butt and I'm out of funds.

I've seen a couple around here lately. One for $400 and the other for $500. Vintage bikes usually sell for more here than in other places. It is an awesome bike.

It might be worth close to your asking price if it's in good shape.

The components that are on it look like Campagnolo C-Record, valuable stuff!

The crank looks like C-record but the rear derailleur looks like its maybe victory? (not as valuable)... It leads me to wonder what else other components are on the bike. Straight tube carbon bikes of this vintage don't get tons of love due to a questionable reputation, carbon has come a long way...

I think I would have trouble selling that bike for even a third of your asking price. But who knows, maybe someone will really want it and cough up the cash!

Cool, I really do appreciate the non flaming and helpful answers. Coming from the car scene, bikers are way nicer!

Apparently some of the stuff is Super Record too? I know all the components are original. My dad bought it from the Denver Spoke in 1986.....it literally was ridden a bit then hung in a garage for the past 20+ years.

For myself, I don't even ride it much since school takes up about 90% of my time.

Any recommendations on a shop that could tell me what the components etc are worth or what they are? Cheers!

As I understand it, putting you own CL ad up in a thread isn't really welcome. It makes it look like you're using the forum to sell your bike, which is against the rules unless you're a paid member and post in the For Sale section. Not trying to be a jerk, just trying to make sure you don't get in trouble.

Having said that, I doubt it will sell for anywhere near $1500, especially on CL. $500 sounds like a reasonable asking price, I don't think I've ever seen one go any higher than that. But I've never seen one with Campy either.

There is one at my LBS for sell for $400. I may go check it out next week if it's still there and see what kind of components it has. I didn't look real close. If it has the campy stuff I may by it just for that to put on my Paramount and sell the frame. You may want to part it out. There may be more money in it that way. The Campy components will bring in quite a bit.

26 year old composite carbon frame Trek = not a chance at that price. $1500 is truly rare in the vintage bike area, just a couple of bikes make that list. All of those bikes would have top of the line steel frames, and top of the line components. And even then, only a couple of rare models break into the $1500 price level.

To market on C/L at any price, you need high quality, hosted pics, not the small C/L stuff. Google how to post full sized pics on C/L, its not too difficult, and is very important in marketing.

1. Are you sure it is a 1986 model?

2. Are you sure it is original?

I thought the composite frame Treks started later than 1986.

Identifying Campy parts is easiest done by googling Campagnolo parts and looking at the pics. Few if any bike shops here would be able to identify them, as their focus is on modern bikes.

This bike is going to be a hard sell in Denver at this time of year. I doubt you will get anywhere near $1500 for the bike Vintage Treks seem to only get $500-600 tops in this market. If the bike does have full C-record component group on it you may get more for the bike parting it out than selling it whole. From the pics it appears to have mixed component group which will likely get less money as whole bike or parted out.

Post close up pictures of the components here and we can help. Also check velobase.com.

If it is full (or mostly) C Record and in mint shape, it is worth near $1500, but that would be on ebay with great, closeup pictures of the components.

It is without a doubt the first year for the Trek composite, which was 1986. It is the 2500 model. Wikipedia has a great link about this.

The Classic and Vintage section has it's own For Sale page as well, so does Road Cycling. Once you become a paid member I believe you can cross post in all three sections. I'm not a paid member so I'm not the person to ask about that, I can't imagine the process being too difficult.

Want to sell on ebay? For that you need an ebay account and a good feedback score, so try selling smaller less expensive items buyers are willing to take the risk on. Trying to sell a whole bike as your first sale will get you nowhere. You also will need detailed information on the components, as well as better pictures.

Aren't those Campy "Cobalto" sidepulls on that bike?
If they are, you have brakes that have a very enthusiastic following and you might get a lot of money just for those brakes alone. Heck,IIRC, I've seen the guinuine Campy "jewel" part on the front of the brake bolt priced at something like 70 bucks a set at eBay!

Those brakes typically run 150-200ish...minus fees. IMO the only way to get money for this is parted out on eBay...I don't think there is much interest in a CF frame from that era and I'd be happy getting $100 for it. The value is in the parts, but CL is hard to get anything approaching market for on parts. As a complete CL bike - MAYBE $700 because someone will buy it as a part out. I think 500ish is more realistic and $1,500??? Good luck! If it were a De Rosa, sure (on ebay, Not CL).

Part it out, no one who would be willing to pay for those components will be putting it anywhere near a Trek.

I am not generally a fan of taking a b ike apart to maximize value but in this case.... it may be the way to go. looks all C Record to me

do you have the original brake block holders? if I was looking at it I would want $80 off the price for that alone

Thanks for the advice.....I think I'll probably just strip it down and keep the frame.....

I am taking better pics tonight with a Canon 7d....hopefully that'll help.

EVERYTHING is as good condition as it looks.

Literally no one believes me about this bike......we're in Colorado with no humidity, etc, so as far as I know, nothing has been touched on this bike for 25+ years.

I'd ridden it downtown for about 10 miles...thats it.

I have an offer for $700 now.......think that's the best I can get or should I part it out?

If i can get $1100-$1200 as components.....is it worth it to wait and do that? Or is this going to be the best offer I have?

You will make more parting it out but it could be a lot of work. Tell the guy with the $700 that you will take $750.

He offered $550....i dropped my price to $900...so we met half way.

Take the $700. To be honest I'm surprised you're getting that much for a carbon-tubed bike. I was really thinking $500 max.
