C&V knee therapy update

Here's about a minute of my best efforts after 2 weeks after knee replacement. It's a slow process. Lot's of swelling still and my furthest rotation is around 100 to 110 degrees and there's a bit of pain in that. I'm weaning off the percosets so I'm miserable to boot. Sorry about the lack of shirt. When you forget to bring something with you, you don't even consider going back for it.

I figure I did about 50 yards in about 4 minutes. There's a little room for improvement but I do notice a striking resemblance between my form and Sean Kellys', agreed?

Yeah, wouldn't want re-kindle any naked riding threads. Hmmnn...do you think Grant Peterson would ride "al fresco" if he knew no one was looking?

My wife had a knee replaced about three years ago. The PT is crucial. She's doing extremely well with the knee now.

Ouch. Good luck and keep plugging away at it. My dressage instructor had both hips replaced a few years ago; it was a long recovery but he's back in the saddle again and happy to be pain free.

I dunno about "C&V knees" -- maybe it's a "retro-roadie" knee now? Keep up the good work!

My wife had her knee replaced 3 months ago. As arex said, the PT was rough. This past week was the first where she felt like she is better than before so there is light at the end of the tunnel. I'll probably need a hip replacement (see Ortho later this month) later this year so we'll see how that goes. I have heard that hips are much easier than knees.

Indeed. My dad had a knee replaced about three years ago and was a huge slacker when it came to PT. He's been paying for it ever since. He has super limited range and it is not always comfortable.

Just a shout out Clubman... hang in there C&V buddy. Sometimes we don't get to chose the path, but try and navigate thru it as best as you can.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.

Dislocated my right knee a little over a month ago; obviously not nearly as traumatic as a knee replacement.

Still only about 80% range on that one, but a lot better than the 20% I had that first week, hobbling around with a cane, afraid to bend the leg at all. It's so weird going from "It's nice out; let's ride a century," one day to "I hope I can get out of my car unassisted" the next. Third week in, I was able to bend enough to ride a mile or two on the flats (with the seatpost jacked up high) and now I'm cautiously commuting with an almost normal stroke; but a little more standing on the pedals than usual.

You'll get there soon enough; I can see you're motivated

I'd avoid the hokey pokey.

Best wishes.

Would be nice to have a guage of some kind on that bike, to show your progress with range of motion.

But you seem to be gauging well enough on your own, and nearly soon enough will be doing the requisite 360's.

Best wishes for steady progress.

clubman, keep up the good work and keep that baby clean and infection free. I can't keep track of all the artificial knees, hips and shoulders in my congregation. I can say confidently from observation, the harder you work at it now, the better you'll be this time next year.

Clubby, watching that video positively sent shivers down my spine. For different reasons (broken legs), I was in the same situation 35 years ago. I spent a lot of time on an exercise bike, gradually lowering the seat from impossibly high, to ridiculously low, as the range of motion improved. It was a long, slow process. The most interesting aspect was the discovery, once back on my bike, that, standing on the pedals, my right leg would just stop when the pedal was at about 10 O'clock (Freewheel bike). There wasn't any pain, it just would stop. Finally I got PO'd, and figured a spin on a fixed gear would be the cure all. It was. Still have restricted limits of motion in both legs, but more than enough for most activity (no limbo for certain!).

Carry on, you'll be fine.

Ed. that explains why you walk the way you do. And causes that hair of yours to bounce!

I don't know about the hair part, but the walk part is quite correct. I had Mum in for some PT, and got to talking with Kim about what it must be like to watch people in daily life and diagnose their ailments. I then proceeded to walk across the room and she pointed out that my right leg is about 3/16" shorter than my left. Actually, I think she said 1/4". I think she's about the only person who ever has indicated that they noticed something amiss, well at least until you just now.

I had my right knee replaced 5 weeks ago. I can ride on the trainer at home and the spin bike at Physical therapy class. All that the PT people say I should put in is 10-15 minutes 3 times a day, along with all the other strength exercises they give me. My surgeon says to not get back on the street until after 9-10 weeks. He is a bit of a tri-geek so I trust him. Work on the bending and the straightening as much as you can and all will be well. Ride on. Plus my leg is now 10mm longer than it was. Will need to check my seat and cleat positions.
