I'm a few years late, but my dad knew just about everyone in this thread...His name is Nick Steder(passed away in 2016), and he raced for Edison Park Wheelmen and at Humboldt Park track..He later was a founder of West Suburban Wheelmen in the Chicago suburbs..He was Illinois State Champ in 1945, and won the Elgin to Chicago bike race in 1945 and 1950, winning in both time and place(only racer to do that)...A lot a names in this post are so familiar, and yes, the Wastyn's built his racing bikes..I have many pictures of the Humboldt Park wooden track, as well as a lot of racing pics... sure is nice to take a trip back in time!

My dad also leaned his bike up against a wall and never saw it again. In France in 1944. Probably happened a lot. He told of racing at the County Fair when he was quite young. He modified his bike with a bigger cog. And had the race won until a dog strolled onto the track in front of him. This would be in the early 30s.
Great post. I don't know how I missed it the first time.
