Bikes: It's complicated.

Two rules

from Rivbike.com

from the Velominati

The Rivendell rules aren't really rules, they're "tips"

The Velominati rules are rules. But somewhat tongue-in-cheek. You gotta like rule V, no?

3 decades ago, I was more into suffering on a bike. Now, it feels good to push myself now and then, but I'm more into cycling for enjoyment now, and being an evangelist for cycling, so the "tips" are foremost in my mind.

Which do you prefer? Likes/dislikes of either?

Bikes: 1989 Schwinn World Sport. 1994 Diamond Back Response Elite MTB. 1964 Schwinn Typhoon. 1974 Bridgestone Sprinter, 2015 Scott Sub 10 Citybike.

I like the Rivbike.com one better.

Oh yeah, rule 5. The ole HTFU often read and quoted in the roadie forum.

A lot of good stuff in both, obviously meant for completely different audiences. I'm more of the Rivendell Rules variety, but it's fun finding out where other people's heads are at; I have a new understanding of some of the characters I've met on group rides.

Bikes: Lots of French, some British and a couple of Italian

Rivbike ones are great. Velominati.... I got to 30 and could imagine an opinionated angry journo in front of a keyboard venting about things. Seems like very personal opinions or thinks they heard other people talking about in a bar.

I always get a kick out of the Velominati rules as they are so tongue in cheek, though I suppose there are folks who take them seriously. I do like rule V as it seems to apply to so many aspects of our current society. That's the one that comes to mind most.

As to the Riv rules and numerous other lists - I find them all useful, get bits of something from them all. They are like a Piggly-Wiggly though: I don't buy everything in the store, just what I need at the time. And just like Wawa, my cart is unique, does not look just like what everyone else has selected.

(Ya'll know 'bout Piggly-Wiggly and Wawa doncha?)

Bikes: Sam, The Hunq and that Old Guy, Soma Buena Vista, Giant Talon 2, Brompton

The Rivendell tips define the way I started riding. As a college student, too busy for other recreation, I started riding my bike to work a little recreation into my day. Their bikes and products they sell fit the style so I have a bunch now. I never have "gotten" the weekly club/charity ride pretend racing scene. I do it a few times a month but, really, why just ride back to the car?!!

Velomanati Rule #9 is this most important.

I love my Hunqapillar.

Amazingly, I learned to enjoy riding a bike without either set of rules.

Go figure.

After 55 it's been Rivbike, though I still have my Specialized Tarmac with all matching gear and road bike shoes, I'm just enjoying my Sam Hillborne relaxed approach more these days.

I'm concerned. If you're a PNW'er, your kit includes fenders and rain gear.

Does this negate rule 9?

Discuss.

take what applies to you and use it.

both lists are not to be lived by, both are written to make us laugh and think.
Sounds good to me

Bikes: It's complicated.

Let us not forget that Rule 12 is invoked here often.

I wear shorts to pad my behind. I wear jerseys for the rear pockets and sometimes they do not match my bike. My socks do not match anything. I am a Rebel!

RivBike #2 . Fine if you're coasting, but otherwise unless you like to chase, you better pedal through the corners 'round here.

This is covered by a rule Velominions forgot, viz: "bicycles are athletic equipment. You must never, under any circumstances, use a bicycle for transportation."

For the heck of it, I threw the rules from the two sources into word clouds for another way to compare/contrast:

RivBike

Velominati

Uh oh. An unwritten rule through which context all other rules must be read. Guess it's back to just being some guy on a bike in a monsoon thunderstorm.

@gugie: Above comment notwithstanding, anyone who rides all seasons up there is a badass. Period. Fenders or no.

nlerner: That does show the difference in tone between the two. Once you get past the top-level words, you get "learn/like" versus "may/must." It's not just the 41... it's the Authoritarian 41.

Alright! Now when I commute to work on cold, rainy days, from now on, that'll be a rule 9 day!
