What does your SO ride?
 

I saw a post by noglider talking about riding with his wife, and it made me wonder what all the better halves ride. My wife really likes biking-- I actually got into it mainly through her-- but what appeals to her in a bike is quite different from what appeals to me! Do your SOs like vintage bikes (or tolerate them because you like them!)?

My wife Amy has three bikes, but I only have pictures of the two I like the most. The first is the bike she rides most often: a Yuba Boda Boda cargo bike. It's aluminum, so its surprisingly light. I like this picture, by the way, because it looks like our sleeping kid is trying to get super aero.

The next one is my favorite, but the one she rides the least: it's a 1993 Trek Multitrack 730. It's not the greatest bike, but it's the first bike she ever bought for herself as an adult. It had become unusable, so last year I replaced a lot of stuff and fixed it all up. The nostalgia of getting her first bike back seems lost on her somewhat! That's ok, I'm nostalgic enough for both of us.

Her third bike is an aluminum Trek 7.3 fx.

Anyone else willing to post the OTHER bikes in your household?

1987 Schwinn Super Sport -- Panasonic built. It's pink, it's Tenax, it's wearing full Shimano 600. I'm often jealous of it.

Mine has a Trek 1200....but she hardly rides it. And by that, I mean we had 1 really good ride together. I am building up an 830 womens frame for her, but I think it might be too big. She is 4'11, so finding a bike that actually fits her is somewhat of a challenge. I would like to find a mixtie that is cool and in good shape...I feel like she would enjoy one of those over a diamond frame, and swapping to bars that aren't drop bars might appeal to her as well. A Raleigh Rapide mixtie just came up on CL about 2 hours away that might be a good fit. Definitely has a cool vintage factor. I always pictured her riding something French, though.

She said she would give the roadbike another chance (her problems were the clipless pedals...she either couldn't get out of them easily and fell over twice or couldn't clip all the way in. I think we fixed the problem, and if not I have a different set for her to try, or just put on flat pedals).

The ride was really good though, made a 10 mile trip out of it and ended up riding to a friends house.

This is my wife's bike. She got hers the same day I got my Scott.

My wife isn't so much into the bicycling.

We got her a Trek 7.2 a few years ago. She likes it 'cuz it's flat black. I got her a flat black rack and bottle cage as well as a black trunk bag and phone holster that sits by the headset.

She calls it her "Bat Bike."

I'd look for something Japanese over the Raleigh or frenchie. In my experience, the Japanese mixtes are usually made of much nicer steel -- Tange 2 or the like, while hi ten for the European ones. And it seems like 9 times out of 10 I see them wearing Suntour Arx, which was really nice stuff for a mid-level group. Fujis, Univegas, and Miyatas pop up with some frequency around here.

She has a 1986 Ironman and a 90s Cannondale R400, but prefers riding her mid 90s Trek 520. She only rides maybe 300 miles a year.

Cool! I'll keep that in mind. The Raleigh that popped up is all of $70, if it is still listed in a week maybe I'll see if I can talk the seller down to $50. Not much pops up in a size that will fit her. Columbia, SC is often pretty barren on the local craigslist. But I do enjoy the hunt.

197? Mercian Superlight. We bought the frame 2nd hand in 1979 and I put it together with Sugino Mighty crank, Camp BB, Suntour VXGT derailler, Cinelli bars and stem, Camp NR seatpost, Avocet ladies saddle.

My wife has a Bridgestone MB5 Xtracycle conversion and a Rans VRex recumbent.

I'll probably fit the Bridgestone XO1 to her, so she has a light conventional bike to ride.

A Women’s geometry 2015 Cannondale Synapse. She flippin loves it. Fits way better than any bike I have built up for her or asked her to test ride after I have refurbished(when they are too small for me).

She also has a 92 Scott rigid frame MTB with the awesome Scott AT-2 bars and some slicks. Its been her around town/family bike for the last handful of years, but she has only ridden it a few times this year because she likes the Cdale so much.

…all this means I pull the WeeHoo most every time.

For what she would do, it would most likely be alright. Just looking for a nice neighborhood cruiser (since my parents live in my neighborhood, but the opposite side it is awfully silly to drive there, but a long walk which we do with the dogs most of the time) to get to my parents house or the pool. Maybe join me in a short jaunt. It's not at the top of her list at the moment, so I am more than willing to wait until something appears for a reasonable price.

She has a Trek Madone 5.2? skinny tire and a Scott MTB (also carbon). Each one easily nicer than mine. Not fair!

Mrs non-fixie has quite a few bikes, and is actually beginning to take an interest, albeit from a slightly different angle than mine. She likes to tour, and has also been won over by some of the C&V events she followed me to, like the Retroronde and L'Eroica.

The one she's ridden most miles on until now. Built by the Gazelle race department for Brands in Amsterdam. Here fitted with trekking bars, MTB brifters and a map holder for a week of touring in France:

Mine is a bike nut and bike rider. Raced in the late 80's and early 90's. She is car free (I can't be cause I have project sites all over the west), so she does groceries, etc. on her Surly LHT. For our road rides she choose between her spanking new Gunnar Sport and her '85 Centurion decked out with the drive train from her much loved, but rusted, Landshark (Dura Ace crank, the rest 600 Tri-color). When the MTB itch needs to be scratched, she is on her '10 Specialized Stumpjumper FS or her '89 Landshark Dirtshark.

She also has available a '75 Paramount, an '85 Trek 620, and an '87 Trek 660 at her disposal.

Nothing yet, but I built her a nice yellow Peugeot UE-18, but she hasn't actually ridden to date. I'm being patient, here; it hasn't been quite two years :P

Either an '05 Chrysler Town and Country, or an '06 PT Cruiser. She hates cycling. Bought her a used recumbent; still hates cycling. Oh well.

When I met her, my wife had an early 70's Peugeot UO-8, but I never saw her ride it. Years later, she tried it and hated it, maybe because she had gotten used to more modern stuff.

For a few years, she rode a 1995-ish Trek 820 with suspension fork and 3x7 drivetrain. I got it at a police auction. It works well but is terribly heavy. She hardly rides it now.

In the city, she has an All-City Macho Man which [MENTION=178433]whatwolf[/MENTION] (Sofia) sold to her. Sofia built it expertly for herself, intelligently choosing the components and aesthetically putting them together. It has a 2x10 drivetrain. It's the first bike my wife had with brifters. She rides on the hoods. I'm so proud of her. It also has toe overlap, and she was concerned about it when she discovered it, but I reassured her she'll get used to it. A few days ago, it did cause a false start but she still hasn't said it's a deal breaker. She is quite fast on this bike.

In the country, she rides a Trek FX 7.3 which she got on craigslist. It's a flat-bar hybrid and performs nearly as well as the All-City.

[MENTION=280039]Lascauxcaveman[/MENTION], have you tried bribing her into taking a ride? It's a beautiful bike, low end components and all.

I don't know if this qualified as C&V, but my wife rides my old (given to her) 2009 Schwinn Alum Comp. I lowered the seat and stem to her liking and that's all it took. I know it's an old Wally World bike, but was owned by my brother-in-law, who had it upgraded a little by the LBS in town.

The sad thing is that my wife will ride it, but then again, she will NEVER go on rides that I want to go on. After about the 5th or 6th mile, she is ready to turn around and go home. Meanwhile, I'm still raring to go and will ride 20, 25, or 30 or more miles... :(
