Inverse C&V

Didn't know how to title this so....

Many of our threads discuss how we change parts on our old (C&V) frames with newer parts, often it is the drive train. Sometimes it is brifters or RD or 6 speed to 11. Could be the post or stem or handlebars or saddle.

What about using a non C&V frame set (new than, say 20 years) and hanging C&V parts on it. Hey you could also hang older parts on newer C&V frame set if you want to. Do you have any examples or would you prefer to use the more updated parts with the static performance of the frame set?

I am guilty of both. You have probably seen this one tooooooo many times but it is a 1984 Trek with 1972 parts on it:

This is the first example and the reason for posting this here because the other thread doesn't really respond to my postings much. 2010 Langster with 1974 Campy record hubs and spokes from the same period, and newer but still C&V Superbe brake set:

Bikes: Waterford Paramount Touring, Raleigh Sports 3-speeds in M23 & L23, Schwinn Cimarron oddball build, Marin Palisades Trail dropbar conversion, Nishiki Cresta GT, Jeunet mixte

Not uncommon with anyone who has bought himself a new frame. My Waterford Paramount got the parts from the Trek frame I then sold off. I don't have much that is newer so cannot comment on "modern" bikes.

Bikes: It's complicated.

In the 80's I went through 4-5 frames with the same gruppo. I'd get one, ride it for a year or so, get a new frame, swap the parts over, and sell the old one. I was getting them wholesale at the time...

SJX, that's a pretty slick looking set of components on that Trek. Of course I know nothing of Treks so the frame could be old or new or multi-phasic in the complex plane and it would still look pretty slick.

Were I to acquire a new steel frame I would most likely equip it with the same sort of vintage Suntour, Sugino, Campy, or similar components as I have on all my bikes.

I keep thinking about my *dream* custom build bike (if I ever get around to doing it) - Most of the parts are going to be C&V. I've tucked away some parts, some NOS, some lightly used- just for this bike.

Bikes: 2 many 2 fit here

I've done this on my modern aluminum big box vacation bikes, that are staged with geographically distant relatives whom I visit periodically. One is sporting late 80s Shimano Exage brakeset and RD; the other 105 brake levers and generic Shimano calipers (similar to 105) of similar vintage, and also an 80s Cinelli stem and handlebar (the horror! )

Since I still like toeclips and straps, if I were to buy a new bicycle (highly unlikely, since I am such a Scots tightwad), I would probably install vintage pedals or vintage-looking pedals, such as MKS Sylvans or platforms.

I retrograded my 1988 Bianchi from 12-speed to 10 by redishing the rear wheel and threading on a 15-17-19-21-24 freewheel, but that's not really worth writing home about.

Several companies are still making steel frames, including Colnago.

I saw some notes about Gregory Taylor on RBR building up a scratch build frame, and finishing it with retro styling.

As far as myself, I'm not beyond using a few old bits and pieces, as they are often dirt cheap. I have both my cargo bike and a tandem conversion with stem shifters. I'd have gone with downtube shifters but the tandem mount would have been awkward, and the stem shifters were easier/cheaper on the cargo bike.

[MENTION=190941]jimmuller[/MENTION] - Thanks for the comment! I scrounged as many parts from the wrecked Le Champion that would fit on the Trek frame. Of course the bb, seat post, head set, stem and handlebars would not fit, being French. The head set and BB are the original ones.
[MENTION=392454]CliffordK[/MENTION] - Nice segway with your comment about Greg. He did the braze-ons on the Trek for me. His latest build is all RS tubes and lugs.

Not a bad idea. I went "up" to Campy 10 on a 1987 D'Arienzo, and then "back" to Suntour GPX, and don't mind it a bit.
Brings to mind, perhaps, I could look for one of those Fuji frames sold by Performance (should be showing up used in the next couple of years) and putting good C&V stuff on it.
