Changing your user name requires moderator intervention. That really isn't a big deal, and explaining the reason you want to change it will remove any delays in them debating whether or not to do it for you.
edit: Hopefully the name without the period isn't being used already. That would be the only reason I can think of why they wouldn't accommodate the request.
