Not much of a story, I'm afraid. Was at the seller's to pick up another frame and asked him about the Longfellow he had sold recently. Appeared the deal had fallen through and he still had it.

650b Toei Randonneur; likely from the late '70s to early '80s, to judge by the 120mm rear spacing.
There's a lot of 'spider vein' rust under the paint, especially on the TT; it's not deep, but it IS extensive:

It's sad to see a Toei in such condition; it's got some real niceties to it: full DB Ishiwata 022 tubeset, Nervex lugs, and internal generator wiring. Fortunately there isn't any rust inside the frame & the cable ducts are clean; and strangely enough- and despite the surface rust- the original 'rinko' HS is in surprisingly good condition- almost no wear on the races & quite buttery once it was cleaned & re-greased.
I figure this will be about a two-year project; this is/was one of my 'grail' bikes.

Cool! I vote to keep it as-is, as long as there's no technical reason for a re-paint. Any chance of a pic of the full bike/frame?

I'll likely post a few pics of the finished bike when it's done, so, I'm afraid you'll have to wait a while to see the results. As for what the frame looks like now, scroll up a couple of entries.
I currently have no idea what new color it will be; I really don't mind the coca-cola brown, but I'm leaning towards navy blue with a pearl/cream HT panel (not long ago I saw a really stunning Nobilette rando in those colors), then again- hey! Anything can happen.

I do hope you're being facetious when you say, "as long as there's no technical reason for a re-paint," since stripping the paint to remove the rust before it further damages the frame is a quite specifically technical reason for a repaint.

And yes, removing the original paint would certainly introduce a technical necessity for a re-paint. And I can certainly understand why you'd want a nice coat of paint on that frame. However, I have a bike that looks like that, and I'm keeping it original as long as it doesn't get any worse.

Nice to see that bike again. I especially like that it still has the Nervar crank set and Huret transmission. I have that combo on the Mercier in post # 25, and was impressed by the shifting action. If Huret derailleurs didn't age that badly I'd have them on many more bikes ...
