Suntour AP Freewheel index compatibility

I have a Suntour AP 7 speed freewheel (the freewheel says "Suntour AP" on it). Can anyone let me know if I can use this on a Suntour Superbe Pro index rear derailleur?

Cheers,

GG

I don't think you'll have a problem with the derailleur per se, but you might need an Accushift shift lever to use the AP freewheel smoothly in index mode.

The sprocket spacing is not the same on every gear on the AP freewheel, and the shifter is made for this. I can't see this difference by eye, but the specs say this and I couldn't get any freewheel to shift smoothly with my Accushift lever besides the AP. It's possible that a thinner chain might have made a difference or one with narrower pins. In fact maybe if I fiddled more it would have worked - - some folks seem to have no issues mixing and matching Accushift stuff. But I suspect Accushift's bad rep comes from replacing bits with non-AP components.

Note that you probably won't have any problem in friction mode.

I am using the Suntour Superbe Pro index shifters and will be using index on them. How will this work with an AP freewheel?

Is there a website with this info?

AP stands for AccuShift Plus. The 'Plus" indicates that it uses gated and and profiled teeth. Basically, AP was SunTour playing catchup with Shimano's Hyperglide. If anything, it should index and shift better than a standard Accushift freewheel when paired with SunTour AccuShift derailleurs and levers.

Search this forum for "centurion" "Accushift" and "hawk"

6 speed Accushift is fun and easy- I'm running 2 Accushift 6 speeds and (and one 5 ) but the goofy spacing on 7 and 8 speed scares me.

This tech doc verifies my guess that the Suntour Superbe Pro Derailleur is compatible but I can't see where or if it says Suntour Superbe Pro Indexed levers will work:

https://www.yellowjersey.org/Suntour21.pdf

But I just skimmed it.

Please let us know how it shifts if you try it.
