What have you been wrenching on lately?

trek 620; got from the trash
Got a quil stem for $5 from the LBS. Used old Specialized handlebars and Zefal pump from my parts collection. Also the Brooks came from a box of parts I bought a couple years ago. The bike was acquired with "crusier" style handlebars.

Dipping my toe in the 650B waters this weekend. My first victim is my ‘82 Univega Viva Sport mixte from a church garage sale. It gets experimented on first when I have new build ideas. It’s actually a cool “sleeper bike” because it’s responsive, light and quick with an 8 speed Campy racing triple drive train. I laced the wheels (Pacenti from Compass) last night and tensioned and trued them this morning. Tires are 38mm Loup Pass. I left on the front rack strut, since the VO rack will go back on. I have some wider fenders to replace this ones I had for the 700c wheels, as well.
I took it around the neighborhood and the TCU campus this evening. Wow! I can see what the fuss is about! Very comfy without sacrificing performance. I get that happy buzz

I like it. The bars, 38mm gumwalls in 650b, and the fact that it's a mixte give it a special look. Keep it locked-up if you're riding around town. Nice work.

In the dark
My commute is now in complete darkness so I no longer can sit up on my prewar Raleigh, Sunbeam, Humber et al and take in airs and vistas of the summer English countryside.
For the dark
DX - crankset,, pedals, front and rear derailleur.
DX aero brake calipers, three brake levers, (in the dark you can never have enough brake levers), DA TT shifters.
winter commute I've decided to put the Dura Ace DX groupset on my matt black 853 Reynolds TT bike, mounted as many lights I can get my hands on , head down and charge!

Painting a fork to match the bike it now lives with. Still on the clean up and prep stage.

Not much over the last five or so days, but working on getting my long-owned Peloton back on the road again. Interestingly, for being a few years older and using Columbus SL/SP tubing (SP on downtube for tall frames), both the Peloton and my newer Prologue (also a Panasonic-built Schwinn) use the exact same lugs and dropouts...even having nearly identical frame angles! Very interesting. Their ride qualities are of course quite different, but I always welcome fresh comparisons.

La Bęte Back on the Road
I've been wrenching on La Bęte ("The Beast" in French) this past weekend. She's languished in the shop ever since our big crash into the rocks. Trued the wheels, mounted new rubber, tuned this and that, and after a little touch-up paint she's good as new.
So of course I rode her down to the river again, just to put that whole sorry episode behind us.
The new "Retro Ride" tires feel lighter than the Kenda "Kiniptions" I had on her before.
I'm pretty happy with the way she turned out, and grateful that she wasn't as damaged as I was in the crash.

Thanks, I wondered because I recently fitted wider retro tyres to my bike and 622-47 (<1.9 inch) was the absolute maximum width, hardly any room left. Let's say I'm confident about my trueing skills. I guess the slender tubing of your bike wrongfooted me, I just don't remember 80's bikes with fat tyres look that good.

I'm wrenching on my 91 Pogliaghi.
I'm going for an all black build on the group and wheels and then highlight that with a white saddle, bar tape, cables and bottle holder. The white will match up nicely with the decals and stand out tastefully I hope. It will be a mix of modern and vintage as you can see in the pics. A 9 speed Campy gruppo, except for the crank which will be a drilliumed black beauty from Velo Orange that I am in love with and then the vintage Cinelli Unicanitor, ITM stem and bars and white cloth tape.

Doing a mock up build on my new to me Roberts frame that I got from Scott aka crank_addict in a trade. I am waithing for some headset spacers and top tube cable guides to come from eBay. Need to decide on bar tape, what bars and stem to use and what real tubulars will go on the rims. I can`t wait to ride this beautiful red thing.

Gazelle Trophy single speed. ....... An hour there, an hour here.... scrounge in the attic... 60+ y.o. 700c clincher rims, Pivo stem mated to O8 Tiki bars. Tressostar wrap.
SR Laprade post, logo removed to somewhat match the Pivo stem, removed the socket bolt, replaced with ally spacer and stainless hex bolt.
700x23mm rubber just fit. Hutchinson $14 pair shipped. Short reach DiaCompe G w- drillium levers, sans hoods. Scott - Matthauser vinti pads.
Rudi's saddle.
UN55 bb, and an early Dura Ace headset...(hehe)
Shining Normandy tall flange hubba, with calf slicer Huret wingnuts. Dusted off spokes, galvies. Cut down the rears to work in the single wall old rims. 3 cross. Front are two cross.
SR Silstar crank, Lyotard dual sided touring. 68 gear inch.
Attempts to go mostly with hexagon adjustable wrench servicing for the road, it sports an Andrew Hague seat post clamp bolt.
The chain ring hardware is next. Hollowed hex head bolts. Clean and service the brake cal's, chain and final adjustments. Roll on.......

Wow. There's a lot here that I've never seen before. Beautiful bike!
"Rudi" saddle? The Google tells me that he reskins/refurbishes old Brooks and Ideale saddles. Is that what yours is?
Also, that bag support on the back. Very cool... I think I need one of those. That would solve so many issues with hanging saddlebags on different bikes. Can you tell me who makes that?
Chapeau, sir! You do very nice work.

^^Thank you, DQ. Indeed the saddle is a recover by forum member RHM. (Believe I have six of them by Rudi). Pricing is in range of a new Brooks but where else can one get such an artistic-handcrafted custom saddle for a bargain?!
The Gazelle project arrived as a frame and fork. I contemplated repaint or possibly powder coat - after brazing on canti brake studs. Making it a Trim - Cross Trophy model. But after trial fit of wheel - tire combos, the needed chainstay crimp for clearance and other issues, I dropped the entire plan.
This really is a mongrel fun build without concerns of original or period correct. The frame patina has grown on me, straight gauge Reynolds 531 is robust for town bike rack abuse.
The way 1950s to 1980s parts cooperate is pretty neat. Weird it seems but I do have a theme in this one -using hex head fasteners. Found some odd hollow hex bolts in my junk fasteners drawer- no idea what they're for but will make them work for the chain ring.
Rear bag support is likely Parks, though this one has no branding. I have another in use, by Schwinn and made by Parks.
The seat post mod, plus finishing to it along with the bars finish had to be matched to the Pivo stem. I rather think the look flows. BTW: Realizing the pitfall of Pivo brand stem, I do use them but drill a hole at the conical wedge slot, stress riser prevention. Yet to have a problem.
Wanted to use GB Coureur 66 centerpulls but their 'shortest' reach series are not enough. This frame was built for 700c and short reach side pulls. The DiaCompe G on hand are good enough.
Cheers-

While motorbikes were cool and all, they still depend upon a substance that a) harms the environment, and b) is not guaranteed to be available into the future.
That, and the fact that bicycles are so much healthier for me has made me turn my creative efforts in the direction of human-powered vehicles. And I find that I don't miss the motors at all. It frees me to concentrate on making the maximum creative impact with the minimum of materials, if that makes any sense. The challenge of mechanical efficiency alone could take a lifetime of study. I just wish I had the time to learn how to build frames. But right now I have a job and a mortgage and debt just like most other folks, so the frame building will have to wait.

Fluked a nice fined, the other day and decided to strip, clean and built back up which I am doing now...
In trying to help a friend, I ended up with a nice wheel set. Campy hubs with a Legnano panto (vintage 1961)...
Laced with ss sb spokes to Weinmann concave 700c rims...
Brand new tires, inner tubes and rim liners make for the perfect wheel set for my Legnano Grand Premio...
