Are these cranksets the same?

I have a Sugino GLP crankset and was thinking how maybe I should look for something up the food chain to replace it until I noticed that Suntour's Superbe Pro of the same vintage clearly used the same mold, the superbe is much more polished but that seems to be the only difference...

Bikes: Current 79 Nishiki Custum Sport, Jeunet 620, notable previous bikes P.K. Ripper loop tail, Kawahara Laser Lite, Paramount Track full chrome, Raliegh Internatioanl, Motobecan Super Mirage. 59 Crown royak 3 speed

They were very similar cranks from the same maker the Superbe Pro has a slightly lower Q factor narrow tread line 109mm spindle vs a 116mm spindle on the GLP. For practical purposes the Superbe would not be much of an upgrade if any from the GLP which is a really nice crankset.

While they look similar they are not identical. However, the big difference is in the manufacturing method and alloy. The Superbe is cold forged from high strength alloy while the GLP is gravity cast from an alloy that is about 1/2 as strong. Consequently, the cold forged crankset can be made slightly thinner and lighter, yet still be stronger.

Interesting! The GLP looks sand cast for sure.
