Help with Miyata 710 restoration
I have a 1986 Miyata 710 in the slate/yellow color scheme. The catalog only shows a partial picture of the bike in this color. I was hoping to put the original color tape and hoods on the handle bars. If anyone knows what these colors were I'd appreciate the info. The previous owner had put the cushion grips on it I'm assuming the hoods were gummies, but they have melted or dry rotted on the old DiaCompes. I'm carefully cleaning it off bc I really like the levers. Also, I'm thinking about putting some Conti Classics on too. Anybody use them before? Thanks skitter.

I don't know what original colors were, but yellow tape black hoods seems to be a common theme in images I've seen. Looks pretty sharp IMO.

Bikes: Still have a few left!
Bought mine used and bare bar, so I don't know what original tape color was, original hoods were black though and I used black or blue cork tape because I had some on hand. Here is a pic showing the original black hoods but that is a Pivo randonneur bar they are mounted on. You will like the way the Seven Ten rides. Another one of those I regret selling. Don

I bought my '86 710 last year, and it had black tape and hoods.

Next month when I'm out in AZ visiting (and where this bike is kept) I will be doing some updates to the bike - replacing a chewed up hood on the right lever, switching to barcons, new shifter and brake cables, etc. Of course that will mean new bar tape. I have both black and yellow, and I'm leaning towards the yellow. The new brake cables will still be yellow, and Teflon-lined. I'm also thinking of upgrading the brakes to dual-pivot calipers. The shift cables will be good old OEM coiled stainless for the SunTour friction barcons.
Bike came with a 23mm tire on the front and a flat 25mm rear. I had bought 28mm Vittoria Randonneur IIs for it, but those are rather heavy at 510g, so I recently bought a pair of much lighter Vittoria Rubino Pro-Tech III 150tpi on special at Nashbar for $24.99 ea that only weigh 280g. We shall see...
