Weighing In

I've taken to weighing my frames and forks before I build them these days. Just because I guess.

From the department of useless facts: My current build in progress is a 1989 Schwinn Circuit with Columbus SL/SP tubing with the OE Tange fork. I was surprised to see this combo weighs 8 tenths (0.8) of a pound more than my Raleigh USA frameset with Reynolds 531c. Same scale was used to measure. In fairness, the Schwinn is bigger with a 59cm seat tube vs. the Raleigh with a 56cm. Still, it's a little disappointing to know this Schwinn "lightweight" with Columbus SL tubing is nearly a pound heavier before I hang the first part.

The frames:

Raleigh frame: 4.27lbs + fork 1.45lbs = 5.72lbs

Schwinn Circuit frame: 4.75lbs + fork 1.8lbs = 6.55lbs

The Circuit frame has only 3 main tubes that are Columbus SL. The rest is Tange I believe. Still a respectable weight on a great frame. I had one and loved the way it rode and handled.

Bikes: Yes

On top of size it seems the fork adds almost half the additional weight.

'73 Speedwell Ti

Frame: 1.30 kg (2.87 lbs.)
Fork (with crown race): .52 kg (1.146 lbs)

Parkpre Team Road (Tange Prestige)

I'm curious to know what my Look 753 and Merlin Ti weigh. I should have put them on the scale before building them, but now I'm not going to strip them to find out.

Don't care--that bike build is dope. When bikes look that good I'll usually pardon the extra pound or two.

Credit to the OP on the inverted water bottle cages to match the Raleigh frame colour. And credit to the 1980's for 2-tone paint jobs.

My 1976 Bridgestone 'Super light' in century trim goes down the road just under 30 lbs.
That's a lot of aluminum.
My '97 Cannondale, with shocks, rack, fenders, and a trailer hitch has got it by 7#

I will be weighing the recently acquired Lotus Legend Compe shortly. My weighing method is frame/fork/adjusting screws/headset/BB (spindle included). I weigh them at the post office close to my business.

Bikes: 78 Masi Criterium, 68 PX10, 2016 Mercian King of Mercia, Rivendell Clem Smith Jr

Low weight isn't necessarily a good thing. I prefer a frame that's a bit heavier and stiffer. To me that feels lighter. I had a 531SL bike a long time ago that was in the 18 1/2 lb range when built. It rode like a wet noodle up hills, at least for me. It got sold to a lightweight sit and spin type dude, who loved it.

I usually weigh stuff and then forget. My 78 Masi with 36h race wheels was just about 20# even built up (with pedals). 2016 Mercian KOM touring frame is 4.9 lb. I forget what the fork was. Material is 725OS in whatever gauge they felt was appropriate for a 64cm loaded touring bike. Feels lighter than the Masi going up hills, which is a very very good bike (obviously).

True. My Grubb is straight guage 531, but its stiffness reminds me of high-end carbon. Bike is just a hair under 26lbs all built.
