Beautiful paint, love the lugs. Very nice build!

Thanks! The photos did not turn out great. Strange since they are clear on my IPad.

Bikes: A green one, "Ragleigh," or something.

Attn all n00b's: when you rattle can an old racing bike some random color, put some modern V-rims with big, garish decals and colored tires and bullhorn bars (or upright bars, or moustache bars, or...) you are not restoring that old bike, no matter how much effort you put into packing the greasy parts with new grease.

What Dboyle has here is what we call a restored bike. (with maybe 0.5 points deducted for incorrect chain and cog set.)

Beautifully done.

Thanks for the compliment! Lots of time spent on the restoration. I will be changing out the freewheel and chain as soon as I can find a 12 tooth Regina freewheel. Most seem to be 14 tooth and that will cause the chain to scrape against the inner seat stay. 12 tooth Reginas from 1973 era seem to be rare. But one will turn up eventually.

I had a chain scraping issue when I set up my 1970 Raleigh Professional. In my case, the rear wheel needed to be re-spaced to shift about 2mm to the right side of the axle from the left side. It may be another option for you.

Wow! That is beautiful! This RRA paint scheme always struck me as really great looking. The contrasting head tube panel and seat tube bands are a winning combination, imho. That's probably why I like the Raleigh Pro paint scheme from the 70's so much too.

Like the others, I'd love to see more photos! Can you tell us who did the paint work (assuming that this isn't a pristine RRA with original paint)?

edit: a quick follow-up question... what's the story on the rear dropouts? I just noticed that they are vertical (vertical-ish?), instead of the standard horizontal dropouts of the day. A quick web search suggests that this is the norm for that model RRA, so it's not a modern tweak or mod. How did the RRA get these dropouts when every other road bike of the day was sporting horizontal dropouts??

thanks for sharing!

Thanks. I do plan to post more photos but want to use a better camera so they are not so grainy. I did the paint myself. Having restored several bikes now I have become fairly proficient at it. Not sure what the story is on the vertical dropouts. They are Campy Gran Sport and they were available in 1973. Why Raleigh decided to use them would be interesting to know----- if anyone has info on this it would be helpful.

Beautiful resto on one of the coolest bikes ever. Wish they'd made 'em big enough for me (65+ cm).

Bikes: are fun!

Beautiful, great work! What did you use to line the head tube lugs - paint pen, lining pen, brush...?

Great job; thanks so much for sharing this project!

Interesting that some RRA's received the Criterium shift lever set while others exhibit the first gen retrofriction set. Perhaps has to do with what they could obtain given the conditions of the boom.

The one I purchased new in 1974 came with the retrofriction set.

Wonderful job - what a treat!

Hi, I used an oil based Sharpie paint pen. Ordered from hobby lobby. Line weight matched original perfectly.

Thx. I took the original frame to a local auto paint supplier who will special mix to match any color.
