why have I got two serial numbers?
Hi all,
I have just got round to playing with an old Raleigh sports bicycle which I bought at a boot sale some years ago and wondered if anybody knew anything about this particular model. it's an orange coloured 26" with three speed Sturmey Archer, drop handlebars and a hub dynamo. I've replaced the inner tubes and greased the hubs and it rides really nicely although it's missing a brake lever but otherwise it all works as it should, changes gear, goes and stops etc. However it appears to have two serial numbers one on the seat lug which is 530458 P which I understand makes it a 1947/48 model (the Sturmey Archer is a 48) but it also has a number under the bottom bracket which is 828823Z which doesn't appear in any of the lists I have seen. The man I bought it from told me his mother used to ride it on events with the local cycle club back in the fifties but knew nothing else about it. I would say the paintwork and most of the parts are original but I am curious as to why it has two serial numbers and what the Z means after the bottom bracket number. Does anybody have any ideas?, Sorry the rules of the forum don't allow me to post a photo but many thanks in anticipation anyway.

They are serial numbers. You read the one on the seat lug and then the one on the bottom bracket shell.

Need pics! Orange with drop bars? It could be the rare Super Sports, does it have the detachable 3 pin chainring? Nice bike. Made in '48 only I think.

Sounds like a very nice bike the 47/48 was an interesting time for Raliegh there were as said some models and features that seem to have been offered for only one or two years. Based on description full featured IG hub bike with drop bars would likely mean it's there deluxe sports model for that year the Super Sport. Now for the serial number the one on the seat tube is the Raliegh serial number and the one on the BB is likely a BB number for thee BB and lugset which was common on older bikes.

Thank you for your comments, the bike looks just like the orange one in the picture from clubman but it's a ladies frame and is a little bit tattier but then it would look better with a good clean up, so maybe not too much. not to sure about the chainring, I need to post a couple of pictures but haven't worked out how to yet.
