Bikes: too many or not enough

Sometimes Ebay delivers - Galmozzi

Ebay has its perils but I have found some great bikes at fair to great prices. I have had two special bikes damaged in shipping recently which was very disheartening. They'll be repaired and pictures will follow. So it was with some concern that I waited for this bike. It arrived perfectly packed and is even better than I hoped. I believe this to be an original 1972 Galmozzi. It is supposedly a single owner bike bought in Chicago and then ridden for a season or two in California and then stored. I think that is believable. It has some signs of being ridden but either the hoods, chain, chainrings and freewheel have been replaced I don't think it has many miles. One surprise was the near perfect Ideal 90 Rebour saddle. There were no clear pictures in the listing, the saddle was listed as Ideale but I am no Ideale expert and didn't recognize what it was. Very nice. More pictures added as cleanup progresses.

It was listed as a 56cm but is actually a square 57cm ctc.

Great score.

What's the best way to Date a Galmozzi? Can you post some pics of the Lugs? And if possible the Frame vent holes. Definitely a #1 Grail Bike.

Wow, that's in remarkable condition. Just beautiful. I checked out the eBay photos -- it looked like the paint was a dull orange, instead of the nice red of your photos. Well done!

Assuming it is a real Galmozzi (which I am sure it is) then two things - basic features and component dates and comparison to other examples. The basic features are all consistent with an early 70s bike - not a lot of braze-ons, single set of bottle cage studs on downtube, over the BB top cable guides but brazed on and not clamp on, 120mm rear spread, nutted brake mounts. Components all date to 72 or are consistent with 72 - PATENT 72 RD, FD with flat cage and no circlip on upper pivot, no date code crank arms, oval Milano logo Cinelli stem, 5 speed Regina freewheel. Brakes are not completely consistent with my 72 date. The drilled Super Record levers were out by 73 or so. The Gran Sport brakes didn't show up until the late 70s, certainly by the early 80s. The Galmozzi template didn't change much into the early 80s but they did adopt recessed brake mounting, brazed on shifter bosses and cable guides, etc. So I am pretty sure this is before 1980. I suspect the brakes and levers were replacements but they are the one question mark.

This bike matches very closely with this 70s Galmozzi on CR Galmozzi Jim Bolivar but is clearly earlier than this 80s galmozzi on CR Galmozzi 1983 bike

My photos are a bit red shifted but it looks much better in person than it did in the Ebay photos.

Beautiful! ya scored nicely on this one.

Is that a 58 on the bottom bracket shell?

I believe it is. 58 would be the center to top measurement.
